Less known Solaris 11 features: Shadow MigrationSunday, February 12. 2012Comments

Joerg, can I migrate from VxFS (either local, or via NFS)? I'm not sure if you mention UFS merely as an example, or specifically as a limitation.
Also, Is there any way to use shadow migration with Solaris 10; or is it Solaris 11 (and 7000-series) only? Thank you for continuing to post lesser-known features, this is quite welcome in the quieter world post blogs.sun.com. =-)
Thats cool! Thanks for the hint - now it looks like i need to install solaris again, after using zfs for linux for a while...
But does this only work on filesystems? What if i want to migrate a pool with multiple filesystems and a load of snapshots? Do i have to do this snapshot per snapshot or is it possible to migrate the pool with all filesystems and snapshots in one go?
I can see one benefit from this; defrag/shrink the pool; though it requires additional temporary storage.
I am planning to migrate my mirrored pool (home server) from one server to another and I am wondering if this would be the best way to do it.
The options that I can think of: (1) split the existing mirror, install in new server and then resilver the mirror (I have one spare drive); (2) ZFS export/send to the new server, detach one drive, reattach and resilver on the new server; (3) shadow migrate. Thoughts?
installed solaris express 11 for testing this feature
got a error output pkg install shadow-migration Creating Plan |pkg: No version of system/file-system/shadow-migration can be installed: pkg://solaris/system/file-system/shadow-migration@0.5.11,5.11-0.175.0.0.0.2.1:20111019T072238Z: Suitable required dependency pkg:/system/core-os@0.5.11,5.11-0.175.0.0.0.2.1 cannot be found core-os update fails in package manager gui too any suggestions ?
Shadow Migration isn't available on S11express, you need S11.

My colleague Constantin wrote a nice article about using encrypted loopback file based pools for backup purposes for example. And don't forget you can do deduplication or snapshots as well for your backuped data. And in case you don't know how migrate yo
